Hannibal's tactical prowess was so great that he is known by many historians as the "Father of Strategy". Alive during a time of Roman supremacy, Hannibal is the best known Carthaginian General.
Hannibal's achievements are varied and phenomenal. He won a dominating Naval Victory in which he employed biological warfare to render his enemies ill. Then there was the Battle of Cannae, where a grossly outnumbered Hannibal went head-to-head with a Roman force of 100,000 men, resulting in 70,000 Romans killed, including 25-30% of the Roman Senate, leading the engagement to be called the most catastrophic loss to Ancient Rome. While there are many other achievements of note, Hannibal is still best known for his march at the outbreak of the Second Punic War, when he led an army from Iberia over the Pyrenees and the Alps into northern Italy, a task virtually impossible with men alone, let alone the vast array of war elephants that he employed.
He was a believer that nothing was impossible if men refused to accept defeat. His famous quote, probably more than anything, defines the man's character: "We will either find a way, or make one."
