My first tour in 'Nam was 3/67-3/69. During that time Snoopy was a popular funnies character w/the troops, especially sitting on top of his dog house wearing his flight helmet giving his three finger salute to the Red Baron, only he wasn't saying "Curse you, Red Baron." I had this emblem on a locally made copy of a Zippo lighter which didn't work very well and is long since gone. Snoopy's decision to leave aptly reminds me of my second tour 11/74-4/75, when we "finally reached the end of the tunnel but forgot to turn off the light off when we hastily left." Snoopy's quote brings it back in perspective. If Ranger UP ever decides to do a little known T-shirt with the saying "Second Place Finisher, Southeast Asian War Games 1959-1975 with the map of VN, I will be an early purchaser!!
My stepdad was a Vietnam Veteran who suffered from PTSD. I remember him having a flashback episode once and the only thing I clearly understood him to say was "I'm ready to go home", The minute I saw this shirt, the tears started. I cried again when the shirt finally arrived. I honestly haven't worn it yet because it brings too much emotion right now, but I will.
I want to wear it and tell his story so people will understand war isn't left on the battlefield and not all wounds are visible. God bless our Veterans.
