May 20, 1861: the day the secession resolution was adopted by the state of North Carolina. An ordinance to adopt a North Caroline state flag was presented the same day by Colonel John D Whitford, stating, "...the flag of this State shall be a blue field with a white V thereon, and a star, encircling the words, "Sirgit astrum", May 20, 1775." Though Whitford and his committee consulted an artist, the design intended by this original description was never to be.
William Jarl Browne prepared and submitted a model flag for the North Carolina state flag, which was far removed from the original description by Whitford. Despite this, the North Caroline Convention approved the :Browne" state flag on June 22, 1861. This flag was to have a red field with two bars making up the fly: the top bar blue and the bottom bar white, with a white five-pointed star centered on the red. Above the star was the date May 20, 1775, and May 20, 1861 below. The North Carolina Regiments carried this flag through the Civil War.
After the war, a bill was passed in March of 1865 and the North Carolina flag was update to its current design.
