The 302nd was one of four all African American fighter squadrons to fight in World War II, the famed Tuskegee Airmen as they’ve come to be known. Formed in 1942, they saw combat in both Europe and the Mediterranean theaters. The unit has flown aircraft ranging from the P 39 Airacobra , P 47 Thunderbolt, and P 51 Mustang to various types of helicopters during a stint as a Rescue and Recovery squadron.
The 302nd now resides at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska where they got brand spankin’ new F 22 Raptors to keep the Russians worried.
