These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.

It's almost impossible to imagine what it would be like to be an American Patriot in 1776.  They were all British subjects, part of the most powerful empire the world had ever seen.  The easiest thing on earth would have been to turn the other cheek at the offenses of the crown.  Freedom, after all, did not truly exist anywhere.  It was but a fleeting thought - a dream of something just out of reach.  

How then, could they be so enamored by the idea of self-governance, that they would risk everything including their own lives for this glimmer of liberty?

They found that courage because for generations they built a new world out of the wilderness.  Hard men carved America out the ether with nothing but their own hands, grit, and the desire for something greater for them and their families.  They built a meritocracy where a man's worth came not from his family name, but by the quality of his work and his character.

So when the King threatened to spit in the face of that, to reduce who they were to being mere subjects, they found in themselves a greater cause.

The American Patriot decided he had a simple and powerful choice: Liberty or Death.
