The Marquess of Queensbury Rules were codified in 1865, and are the generally understood rules of boxing. They were the first boxing rules to mandate the use of gloves, and are the guidelines that set up the rules of modern boxing.

Today, Queensbury rules are also understood to mean a gentleman's agreement or "in the interest of Fairplay". If two men were to engage in a scuffle, for example, they may agree at the onset to Queensbury Rules, meaning that once a man was down, the fight would not continue.
