The New National Figure.

Originally published in the Memphis Commercial Appeal and reproduced in The Literary Digest on December 27, 1919, this political cartoon depicts the newly formed American Legion standing tall above the divisions of the day. While politicians, special interests, and competing ideologies fought for influence, the Legion represented something different: veterans united by service to their country, their fellow veterans, and their communities. More than a century later, that mission remains unchanged.
