When a sailor crosses the Equator, he becomes a Shellback. There’s a big ceremony that probably involves grease, paint, garbage, booze, and probably shaving some random limb or appendage (can’t confirm or deny).
When a sailor crosses the International Date Line sailing west, he enters the Domain of the Golden Dragon and in accordance with sea service tradition he or she is inducted into the Order of the Golden Dragon. If you’ve done it you probably got some cheesy certificate. We made you a shirt. It’s way cooler than a certificate, and you deserve it.
