Ben Franklin originally drew this as a political cartoon which was published in the Gazette in May of 1754. He wanted to promote unity among the British colonies leading up to the French and Indian war.
As the American Revolution loomed on the horizon, the cartoon again found itself in mass publication. Patriots from the 13 colonies used the cartoon to promote colonial unity, this time against the British.
