Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first two people on the
Moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz
Aldrin, both American, landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on
July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC. Armstrong's first step onto the lunar
surface was broadcast on live TV to a worldwide audience. He
described the event as "one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for
mankind." Apollo 11 effectively ended the Space Race and fulfilled a
national goal proposed in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy: "before
this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him
safely to the Earth."

The Apollo 11 mission emblem was envisioned by Astronaut Michael
Collins, the third member of the Apollo 11 crew who wanted a
symbol for "peaceful lunar landing by the United States". The eagle
illustration was later also used for the Eisenhower Dollar Coin and
The Susan B. Anthony Dollar.

On July 23, the last night before their return splashdown, the three
astronauts made a television broadcast in which Aldrin stated, “This
has been far more than three men on a mission to the Moon; more,
still, than the efforts of a government and industry team; more, even,
than the efforts of one nation. We feel that this stands as a symbol of
the insatiable curiosity of all mankind to explore the unknown…”
This month’s Shirt Club shirt honors the 50th anniversary of the
historic Apollo 11 mission and the countless men and women of
America that made the mission possible.
