"The Daring Ones" was the name given to the Italian elite special forces in World War I. The Arditi were assault units, known as Reparti d'assalto, that were separate from the regular army. They were the modern shock troops of the frontline whose job was to break up the entrenched enemy and punch a hole in their defenses for the main force to attack through.

Known or their zealous ferocity and grit, the Arditi would wear plate armor, carry heavy machine guns, and even dive into trenches armed with knives. Their exploits earned them prestigious status among the ranks of the Italian army and were touted as examples of what it meant to be an elite soldier.
