In August 1964, the USS Maddox exchanged gunfire and torpedoes with three North Vietnamese Torpedo boats, killed six North Vietnamese sailors. Two days, later the Maddox reported an additional engagement, later found to have never occurred.
Under the "astute" leadership of Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which opened the door for a more protracted war in Vietnam.
Over the course of the next decade, 2,709,918 Americans served in Vietnam, suffering over 58,000 casualties.
