Long hours of road work, a starvation diet, and the exclusion of any real social life that would break those regular people where the fuel for the fire of every hardcore wrestler. Everyone knew who the top wrestlers were and if you weren't gunning for the top then you really weren't anyone. There was no team to blame for a loss, there was no strategy mishandled by someone else to hide behind. Out there, it's just you and your opponent. Out there, the only one who decides whether you win or lose is you.
